According to Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist who helped to popularize emotional intelligence, there are five key elements to emotional intelligence(EQ):

Emotional Intelligence
  1. Self-awareness – the state or condition of being aware. Having knowledge and consciousness.
  2. Self-regulation – control of oneself as it related to thoughts and emotions
  3. Motivation -providing a reason to act in a certain way
  4. Empathy – the identification of feelings, thoughts and/or attitudes of another
  5. Social skills – interaction and communication with others where social rules and relations are created.
