According to Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist who helped to popularize emotional intelligence, there are five key elements to Emotional Intelligence:
- Self-awareness – the state or condition of being aware. Having knowledge and consciousness.
- Self-regulation – control of oneself as it related to thoughts and emotions
- Motivation -providing a reason to act in a certain way
- Empathy – the identification of feelings, thoughts and/or attitudes of another
- Social skills – interaction and communication with others where social rules and relations are created.
